Elderly Support

Population ageing in Bangladesh is gradually emerging as an issue not separate from social integration, gender advancement, economic stability or poverty. The older section of the population is increasing much faster than the total population. In Bangladesh, 6.9% of the population was classified as elderly in 1950, and is projected to increase to 8% in 2020 and 17% by 2050. The median age of Bangladeshi population was nearly 20 years in 2000 and is projected to increase by nearly 15 years over the next half century. Population ageing is already having major consequences and implications in all areas of life, and will continue to do so. In the economic area, population ageing will affect economic growth, savings, investment and consumption, labor markets, pensions, taxation and the transfer of wealth, property and care from one generation to another. JWF wishes to increase awareness and help the elderly in any way possible, whether it be through improvement of healthcare service or public interest litigation to support their needs. This in turn might include for pro bono service or through litigations for awarding them compensation for an adequate living. We wish to help the elderly and by doing so help reduce the injustice in society.

The Parent's Care Act, 2013, a law to ensure social security of the senior citizens, compels the children to take good care of their parents. By this law, the children will have to take necessary steps to look after their parents and provide them with food and shelter. Each of the children will have to pay 10% of their total income regularly to their parents if they do not live with their parents. Moreover, children will have to meet their parents regularly if they live in separate residences. Furthermore, under no circumstances are children allowed to send their parents in old homes beyond their wishes. The law also allows aggrieved parents to file cases against their children if they decline to support them. A first class magistrate court will settle issues related to the violation of the law. For reconciliation of any issues, local government representatives such as chairmen, members and others authorized by them will settle the disputes. The law has the provision of Tk. 200,000 as fine and, in default, six months jail term for violation of the law. Spouse or any relative, including the in-laws, will be considered as offenders and will be punished if they are proved to be guilty of having objected to such support.

JWF works towards promoting the wellbeing and inclusion of older women and men, and reduce poverty and discrimination in later life. A country where all older people can lead dignified, healthy and secure lives would help us be a step closer to a truly bountiful country which would show the older generation the dignity it deserves and not forget them due to their deteriorating health and mental capabilities. Our aim is to support those neglected elderly people by creating facilities for them bringing the issues to the government and also to mitigate their family issues by restituting and bonding among themselves.
