Pure Food Pure Rights

Food adulteration has become a very common practice in our country and we are consuming these foods almost every day, which have numerous harmful effects to our health. Food adulteration means anything adding or subtracting with food making it injurious to health. This adulteration may be done intentionally or unintentionally. Intentional adulteration is a criminal act and punishable offense. Food adulteration with poisonous chemical like formalin is widespread and regularly applied on fish, fruit, meat and milk that causes different types of cancers, asthma and skin diseases. Coloring dyes, calcium carbide, urea, brunt engine oil and even some permitted preservatives are used in excessive amount that affect multiple organs of human body. Mostly it causes cancer like colon, peptic ulcer diseases, chronic liver diseases including cirrhosis and liver failure, electrolyte imbalance and eventually kidney failure. Adulteration at any level can be checked under the prevailing rules and regulations. As adulteration is a heinous crime, it can definitely be treated as a criminal offence. Therefore, the existing rules under Cr. PC are strong enough to deal with it. The authorities concerned should have a strong will to implement the rules. Besides, there is the Safe Food Act 2013 which the government has implemented to fight adulteration and protect public health. The Bangladesh National Parliament has passed the Food Safety Act, 2013 on October 10, 2013 (after repealing and re-enacting the existing outdated laws in this regards) in order to make provisions for the establishment of an efficient, effective, scientifically based Authority and for regulating, through coordination, the activities relating to food production, import, processing, stockpiling, supplying, marketing and sales as well as to ensure the people’s right toward access to safe food through appropriate application of scientific processes and state of the art technology. Through various awareness posts on the JWF official social media page we try to let people know of the various conducts which is performed by unscrupulous syndicates involved in food business of Bangladesh and allow them the opportunity to fight back against such injustice happening so blatantly- harming the life of our friends, neighbors and families. We wish to undertake projects, seminars & any public interest litigation(in line with the above mentioned provisions) if required in the future in order to remove food adulteration from the markets & storehouses of the country. JWF wishes for a country free from all manner of food adulteration practices where both children and adults can live a healthy & prosperous life.
